Laveau assumed the leadership role of a multiracial religious community for which she gave consultations and held ceremonies. During her time, she was known as "The Priestess of the Voudous"; among many other colorful titles.

The story behind the imposing “haunted house” at Royal and Governor Nicholls streets in New Orleans' French Quarter is one filled with true horror from a fire in 1834 that exposed the unspeakable cruelty of Madame Delphine Macarty Lalaurie. Delphine Lalaurie was run out of New Orleans in 1834 when it was discovered she was torturing her slaves.
